Mullvad VPN utilizes first-class technology to ensure all the accounts they serve are secure. As of October 2018, Mullvad operates with the vision to provide transparent and honest service within the VPN industry. The parent company, Amagicom AB, along with Mullvad, is 100% owned by Fredrik Strömberg and Daniel Berntsson who are both very involved with the company. It was originally launched in 2009 and operates using WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols. Mullvad VPN is an open-source commercial VPN service. So, I began my search for a VPN provider again and my research led me to Mullvad VPN. We were staying in an Airbnb and I really didn’t feel that the network was as secure as it should be. I did, however, find myself on vacation in Florida recently. I actually don’t leave my home much so it doesn’t make a lot of sense for me to pay for a year of service when I don’t know how much I’ll end up using it during that time. Since then, I have been somewhat obsessed with finding the best VPN provider available. That day, I went for an hour and a half without using the internet because I didn’t want to use WiFi in a place that wasn’t secure. So, I could no longer justify paying for their service. So, I logged into the service, but for some reason, it would not work. At the time I was using PIA (Private Internet Access) as my VPN. XXXX reserves the right to reduce throughput or access as need be. All communication over XXXX network is subject to monitoring. No network communication should be considered private or protected. I connected to their WiFi and an obnoxious warning popped up on the screen that let me know that they log all the data that flows through their network. I remember being at a local car stereo store waiting on an installation to be completed a few years back. I am a firm believer of this because I value my privacy. The remainder of our review on Mullvad VPN is shown below.Įveryone needs a VPN. Many VPNs are at a minimum going to show location, system, and browser information. The two main areas that were addressed by enabling the VPN were the IP address and a DNS leak. When I ran the test without the VPN enabled, the score was 5 out of 12 points, or 41%. The anonymity rating was 7 out of 12 points or 58%. Showed an officially registered autonomous system number So, we ran a full anonymity screening using Mullvad and these were the results. Since then, we had the site recommended to us as a place to test how anonymous a VPN is keeping your identity. When we first published this review, we ran some basic tests to check the security of the VPN’s connection. You can add a specific policy for the "destination ip" VPN values your privacy and provides as much anonymity as possible for $5.50 a month. But you should already use if you did follow the mullvad setup guide for merlin ) I would recommend you to use policy routing. If you're ensure of the result, check if you see a difference in the result with and without the vpn. If you want to check if your traffic to 193.138.218.74 (mullvad public dns) is going thought the vpn when your tunnel is up, you can use a traceroute (or tracert on Windows) command. We also hijack DNS requests (port 53) in order to prevent DNS leaks." "To protect ourselves, our customers, and the quality of our service, we block TCP port 25 because of email spam and ports 137, 138, 139, and 445 due to a Microsoft security issue. So in doubt, waiting for a confirmation of the above statement.ĮDIT 2 : found it again, this statement is in their ToS : If you send plain (not encrypted with DoT or DoH) dns requests through the tunnel to another public dns (like 8.8.8.8), they (mullvad) will intercept them anyway and redirect the dns requests to their own dns.ĮDIT : I'm pretty sure of having already read the information above but I can't find it again on the mullvad website. "We also have a DNS server running on each VPN server that can only be accessed via the tunnel on this address for OpenVPN: 10.8.0.1 (or any other address matching 10.x.0.1) and 10.64.0.1 for WireGuard servers." Each mullvad server has their own local dns server : 10.8.0.1 is also a mullvad dns server which is ONLY reachable from the vpn. You can ensure the dns traffic go inside the tunnel using multiple way but it's also depend of how you already configured your openvpn client on the router (do you route all the traffic for all of your device? Do you already use some routing policies?)įew tips you may need to know to make some changes or choices : But it doesn't matter IF your dns requests are going inside the tunnel because they are already encrypted this way. Mullvad DNS server doesn't support DoT (DNS Over TLS).
